โ€œThe Event Starts at 7โ€

A Deep Dive Into One of the Greatest Lies Ever Told in the Rio Grande Valley

If you are new to the 956, there is something important you need to understand immediately:

When somebody in the Valley tells you:

โ€œThe event starts at 7โ€ฆโ€

that information is almost completely meaningless.

Because in South Texas, โ€œ7 PMโ€ is not a time.

It is a vague spiritual concept.

Letโ€™s break down what actually happens.

7:00 PM

Only:

  • the host,
  • three tias,
  • and one overly responsible cousin are there.

Nobody else has even showered yet.

The DJ is still unloading speakers.

Somebody is yelling about extension cords.

8:15 PM
A few people begin arriving.

Mostly the same people who show up early to flights and quinceaรฑeras.

One uncle is already drinking beer from a folding chair watching everyone else work.

9:30 PM
Now weโ€™re talking.

The real crowd finally starts arriving.

Parking becomes a war zone.
Kids are sprinting unsupervised through the yard.
Someoneโ€™s truck is blocking three vehicles.

Music volume increases to federally concerning levels.

10:45 PM
Food finally appears.

At this point:

  • nobody remembers who cooked what,
  • someone burned the tortillas,
  • and at least one person has already asked:

โ€œYโ€™all got salsa?โ€

despite standing directly in front of six salsas.

11:30 PM
A family argument briefly erupts over:

  • politics,
  • football,
  • inheritance,
  • who borrowed a trailer in 2017,
  • or somebody โ€œacting different now.โ€

Children continue playing completely unaffected.

12:15 AM
The DJ begins saying:

โ€œOne last song.โ€

This is a lie.

There will be at least 11 more last songs.

1:40 AM
The hosts are exhausted.

Nobody leaves.

A group of men is still standing in the driveway discussing:

  • cattle prices,
  • local politics,
  • weather radar,
  • and whether the Cowboys are finally back.

They are not.

2:10 AM
Someone hands you food โ€œfor the road.โ€

You did not ask for it.

Refusing is considered disrespectful. You risk losing a friendship if you decline this.

โ€”-

And this is why Valley people never trust event start times.

Because in the Rio Grande Valley:

  • parties are marathons,
  • โ€œstarting timeโ€ is optional,
  • and leaving is harder than getting a mortgage.

Welcome to the 956.
